The journey is as important as the destination. The artist’s identity, both as cultural producer and an itinerant being, is enmeshed in the pragmatic economies of space. While in transit, the artist immobile in the bus- space, whose movement is limited to his seat for 11 hours between Legazpi and Manila, recreates his experience as a traveler/artist. The items collected and combined inquire about the temporal gap that cut across the artist-traveler’s memory.
The concept of travel as an art process is explored in Cesar’s production of painting, ready-mades, wire frame, sculptural assemblage, and video documentation.
“My work of art emanates from the diversed human experience of navigating space and time. Out of my comfort zone and exhaustion by the long hours of travel, emerge many ideas expressed in my artworks”.
“Water color in my painting allows me to depict quick impressions on what I see around. Using concrete markers or mohon, points out specific boundaries in space. Wings signify my journey. The notion of bed, as source of comfort and relaxation, becomes the chair that I frequently used in my travel. The toy tin can car is a representation of my childhood memory of travelling. The video helps me document my travelogue and serves as my initial take off point in generating my art concept”.
