Wherever I am, the world comes after me.
It offers me its busyness. It does not believe that I do not want it.
Now I understand
why the old poets of China went so far
and high
into the mountains, then crept into the pale mist.
"The Old Poets of China" by Mary Oliver

Join us this week at the UP Asian Center: a public lecture on Malaysia-China relations on 16 August (9 am – 10:30 am), and a policy forum on the ASEAN Economic Community on 17 August (9 am – 3 pm).

Both events are free and open to the public, but seating is first-come, first-served; participants are encouraged to pre-register online.

AUGUST 16 LECTURE: MALAYSIA-CHINA RELATIONS

"Dealing with the Rise of China: A Malaysian Perspective," will be delivered by Dr. Abdul Razak Bagindaon 16 August 2017, 9:00 am to 10:30 am, Seminar Room, UP Asian Center, QC.

China has arrived on the world stage. Its gargantuan "One Belt One Road" project epitomises its ambition to play a global role. To some, China provides some hope in an environment that could be described as "a global economic growth grinding to a halt." While for others, China is seen as taking the opportunity to play a dominant power and inevitably perhaps ending up as a hegemon. Not surprisingly, there has been a myriad of evaluations as well as prognosis on China's current and future positions in Asia and in the world. Given the multi-dimensional powers of China, how does one begin to evaluate this new superpower? What should be the considerations for states when dealing with China? This lecture will try to provide a perspective on how to assess and evaluate China.

AUGUST 17 FORUM: ASEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY

The Bugkos Research Program of the UP Asian Center will hold a policy forum, National Interest and the ASEAN Economic Community: Convergence or Competition?, on 17 August 2017, 9:00 am–3:00 pm*, at the Seminar Room, UP Asian Center, QC.

The forum will bring together leading political economists from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines to gain a better understanding of country processes for the ASEAN Economic Community initiative: What are the stakes for each country’s participation in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)? How is each country preparing their domestic economies and constituencies for AEC integration? How are these countries positioning themselves in the regional trade treaties in relation to the changing global economic architecture?
