Professor Rolando G. Talampas has been appointed Officer-in-Charge of the Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman starting May 1 following the term of Professor Joefe B. Santarita, who served as Dean from 2015 to 30 April 2021, and pending the appointment of a new dean.
Professor Talampas is also the College Secretary of the UP Asian Center, and Head Secretariat of the Tri-College PhD Philippine Studies Program. His research interests cover West Asia, Philippine Studies, development studies, and Iraq, on which he did his M.A. thesis at the UP Asian Center. He has handled two core courses, AS 210 (Theories and Perspectives on Area Studies), AS 299 (Research Methods), PS 268 (Philippine Relations with East Asia), and several Southeast Asia-related courses.
Most recently, he is the author of "'Islam' Sama Bajau in Christian Metro Manila: Negotiating Religion in Migration" which appeared as a book chapter in Exploring Religio-Cultural Pluralism in Southeast Asia: Intercommunion, Localization, Syncretization and Conflict (2019); "Philippine Overseas Migration,” which was published in 2018 Philippine Development Report (2018); and "Transport and Mobility: The Filipino Via Crucis,” a chapter in Cars, Automobility and Development in Asia: Wheels of Change (2017).
He also authored "Indonesian Diaspora Identity Construction in a Southern Mindanao Border Crossing" which was published as a special issue, “Emerging Asian Communities” of Asian Studies: Journal of Critical Perspectives on Asia (2015).

 The UP Asian Center offers M.A. degrees in Asian Studies with four fields of specialization: Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. The Center also has an M.A. program in Philippine Studies that allows students to major in Philippine society and culture, Philippine foreign relations, or Philippine development studies. The Center offers a Ph.D.  program in Philippine Studies in conjunction with the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
