The article “China Studies in the Philippines: Evolution and Challenges” by Dr. Tina S. Clemente, Associate Professor at UP Asian Center, was recently published as a chapter in the book, From Sinology to Post-Chineseness: Intellectual Histories of China, Chinese People, and Chinese Civilization, edited by Chih-yu Shi, Peizhong He, and Lei Tang and published by China Social Science Press. 

The groundbreaking study looks at the knowledge production and transformation of China Studies as a field of study in the Philippines.

"The field of China Studies in the Philippines was a response to the increasing importance of economic-political relations with China in the Cold War era......In this light, the main objective of the research is to elucidate the history and current state of China studies in the Philippines. The research employs content analysis, key informant interviews and bibliometrics, and seeks to weave an incipient narrative by looking closely at the institutionalization of the field through tertiary education institutions, knowledge production of students, and reflections on the influence of the scholars on the field.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Clemente teaches graduate courses at the UP Asian Center, including one on the social and economic development of China, one of three courses required for students majoring on the Middle Kingdom. She obtained her Ph.D. in Economics from the School of Economics, University of the Philippines Diliman. View her full faculty profile.
