Wherever I am, the world comes after me.
It offers me its busyness. It does not believe that I do not want it.
Now I understand
why the old poets of China went so far
and high
into the mountains, then crept into the pale mist.

ABOUT THE EXTENSION PROJECT

As part of the revitalization of its extension initiatives, the UP Asian Center is preparing to launch the short course Elevat-Ed: Leveling Up Teaching for Contemporary Issues, in line with its broader Extension Agenda. This agenda includes organizing capacity-building workshops and training for government and non-government institutions and individuals in areas related to Asian and Philippine culture and society, national and regional development, foreign relations, and related concerns.

This course, conducted online, aims to enhance the capacity of Filipino teachers in teaching political, economic, social, and cultural topics outlined in the K-to-12 curriculum of the Department of Education. It will utilize instructional materials developed through the UP Asian Center’s research and teaching experience.

The short course will equip participants with effective strategies to help students better understand complex national issues and encourage meaningful, values-driven discussions. Teachers will also be guided in creating relevant and structured lesson plans that promote analytical and creative thinking while encouraging student engagement with societal matters. Activities will include interactive lectures, practical applications, and collaborative learning exercises.

PRELIMINARY LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

      1. Develop a deeper understanding of contemporary issues.
      2. Acquire effective strategies for teaching these topics in engaging and accessible ways;
      3. Design lesson plans that support student reflection, analysis, and civic engagement;
      4. Confidently facilitate discourse through classroom discussions, debates, and collaborative learning.

To ensure that the short course is practical, meaningful, and directly applicable in the classroom, the Center is conducting a Training Needs Analysis (TNA). Teacher responses will play a vital role in shaping the design and delivery of the program for a more effective and impactful training experience.
