Wherever I am, the world comes after me.
It offers me its busyness. It does not believe that I do not want it.
Now I understand
why the old poets of China went so far
and high
into the mountains, then crept into the pale mist.
"The Old Poets of China" by Mary Oliver

Last October, Dr. Tina Clemente, Associate Professor at the UP Asian Center, presented three China-Studies related papers at different conferences held in Taipei, Taiwan; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Beijing, China.

Dr. Clemente’s first stop was at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania in the United States, where she presented, “Understanding China’s Economic Diplomacy Towards the Philippines” at the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Association of Asian Studies (MARAAS) Conference. Held from 9 to 11 October 2015, the conference was a venue for scholars all over the world to exchange views on various aspects of the burning theme in Asia today: conflict and cooperation. Learn more about MARAAS and download the conference program.

Dr. Clemente later flew to Taiwan to read a paper, “Tsinoys and the Philippines-China Maritime Dispute” at a conference held from 23 to 24 October at the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). The conference, “All I Need Is Love? Nation, Affect and Aversion in a Post-Imagined-Community Asia” was organized by the Graduate Institute of Mass Communication, NTNU and the Monash Asia Institute, Monash University. Dr. Clemente’s paper was part of a panel, “The Rise of China.” Learn more about the conference and view the program.

Last on Dr. Clemente’s itinerary was the conference, “Intellectual History of International China Studies: Communication and Conversations.” It was held on 29 to 30 October 2015 in Beijing and featured Dr. Clemente’s paper, “China Studies in the Philippines: Evolution and Changes.”
