Two faculty members of the UP Asian Center, Dean Joefe B. Santarita and Dr. Eduardo Tadem each received UP Diliman Professorial Chair Awards last December 2015. The award is given to UP faculty who has a PhD/doctorate degree; creative output or research published in peer-reviewed journals and publications; and thesis advisees or mentees for laboratory research.
Dr. Santarita is Associate Professor and current Dean of the UP Asian Center. Specializing in South Asian Studies, he is the author of “Growth and Government: the Rise of Information technology Enabled Services’ Centres in India and the Philippines,” which appeared in "State, Society and Information Technology in Asia" and was published by Ashgate in 2014. Last year, he wrote an article, "Migration and Business: A Survey of Indian Communities in the Philippines" (download free) for "Asian Studies: Journal of Critical Perspectives on Asia," the journal published by the UP Asian Center.
Dean Santarita handles several graduate courses at the Asian Center, including Seminar in South Asia (India), Regionalism and Community Building in Asia, and Asia in Antiquity, among others. He completed his PhD in South Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore. One of Dr. Santarita’s thesis/dissertation advisees is Mr. Gilbert Que, who produced a thesis on the role of “post-1990 Bollywood films in the identity formation of second-generation Indian transnationals in Metro Manila.”
Dr. Eduardo C. Tadem is Professor of Asian Studies at the UP Asian Center. He is the author of “Technocracy and the Peasantry: Martial Law Development Paradigms and Philippine Agrarian Reform” which appeared published in the Journal of Contemporary Asia. The Editor in Chief of "Asian Studies: Journal of Critical Perspectives on Asia"—the journal published by the UP Asian Center—he completed his PhD in Southeast Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore.
Dr. Tadem handles several graduate courses in the Asian Center, including Theories and Perspectives in Area Studies, Social and Economic Development in Southeast Asia, and Agrarian Development and the Peasantry in Asia, among others. His thesis advisees include Nadine Umali, who is writing her thesis on Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s novels.

The Asian Center offers M.A. degrees in Asian Studies with four fields of specialization: Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. The Center also has an M.A. program in Philippine Studies that allows students to major in Philippine society and culture, Philippine foreign relations, or Philippine development studies. The Center offers a Ph.D. program in Philippine Studies in conjunction with the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
