Wherever I am, the world comes after me.
It offers me its busyness. It does not believe that I do not want it.
Now I understand
why the old poets of China went so far
and high
into the mountains, then crept into the pale mist.

Dr. Reuben Ramas Cañete, Professor at the UP Asian Center, received the UP Arts Productivity Award and was named “UP Artist II” in a ceremony held last 28 August 2015 at the Bahay ng Alumni, University of the Philippines Diliman.

The Arts Productivity Award is given as part of the UP Arts Productivity System (APS), a program designed to incentivize and promote “outstanding productivity in the creative arts or in arts scholarship.” The title of “UP Artist” is bestowed on distinguished employees of the University of the Philippines who have published, exhibited, presented, and/or performed various works of art, and gained recognition in the Philippines and abroad, among other criteria.

Applications to become a UP Artist are subject to a point system, a stringent screening process, and approval by the Board of Regents, the University of the Philippines’ highest governing body. There are three possible ranks, UP Artist I, II, or III, any of which can be attained by meeting a minimum number of points. Appointed UP Artists receive annual monetary incentives and hold the title for three years, which is renewable depending on performance. The APS was established in 2008, and to date has recognized 68 artists. Learn more about the Arts Productivity System.

Appointed UP Artist I two years ago, Professor Reuben Ramas Cañete has a Ph.D. in Philippine Studies from the University of the Philippines Diliman. He specializes on Museum Studies, Visual Anthropology, and Political Aesthetics, among other fields. Professor Cañete is the author of numerous essays, peer-reviewed journal articles, and several books, most recent of which is “Amadeo Manalad: Drawing a Saga.” He is also a member of the Executive Council of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
