Marking the 70th anniversary of the end of the Pacific War, the UP Department of History, in cooperation with the UP Third World Studies Center and the UP Asian Center, will be holding “Occupation & Liberation: An International Conference on the Pacific War in the Philippines” from 3 to 5 September 2015 at the GT-Toyota Asian Cultural Center, Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman.

The conference will feature panels on the following topics:

  • War Crimes
  • Experiences of Foreigners
  • Pan-Asianism
  • Literature and Propaganda
  • Science and the Environment
  • Narratives from the Provinces
  • Health
  • Transportation

Plenary speakers throughout the three-day conference include Ricardo Jose of the UP Department of History; Frank Dhont of the University of Brunei Darussalam; Paul Kratoska of the National University of Singapore; Takefumi Terada of Sophia University; F. Sionil Jose, National Artist for Literature; Benito Legarda, former governor the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas; and Helen Mendoza, retired UP faculty.

The conference fee is P1,500. Participants will be provided with a conference kit, lunch and snacks for the three days of the conference. We also encourage you to pre-register by filling out this form. UP undergraduate students can attend for free, but will not receive meals or conference kits. They are requested to bring their school IDs.***

The Asian Center offers M.A. degrees in Asian Studies with four fields of specialization: Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. The Center also has an M.A. program in Philippine Studies that allows students to major in Philippine society and culture, Philippine foreign relations, or Philippine development studies. The Center offers a Ph.D. program in Philippine Studies in conjunction with the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
