Wherever I am, the world comes after me.
It offers me its busyness. It does not believe that I do not want it.
Now I understand
why the old poets of China went so far
and high
into the mountains, then crept into the pale mist.
"The Old Poets of China" by Mary Oliver

Dr. Aileen Baviera, Professor at the Asian Center, took part in the 4th Annual Jakarta International Defense Dialogue (JIDD): Building Maritime Collaboration for Security and Stability, held on 19-20 March 2014 at the Jakarta Convention Center, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Dr. Baviera was part of a panel on "Strengthening Legal and Diplomatic Cooperation at Sea,"  one of several convened by the JIDD. She and her fellow panelists discussed, among other things, the "current legal and multilateral tools to facilitate maritime cooperation;" the role of UNCLOS and its adequacy as a framework in resolving territorial disputes; and "other legal frameworks" that can enhance diplomatic cooperation.

The JIDD is organized by the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia in partnership with the Indonesia Defense University (IDU) and the International Peace Institute.

Dr. Baviera has published several journal articles on China-ASEAN relations, regional integration, Asia-Pacific security; and territorial and maritime disputes. She helps coordinate the Chinese Studies program of the Asian Center, and teaches MA-level courses, including Politics and Governance in China.
