Wherever I am, the world comes after me.
It offers me its busyness. It does not believe that I do not want it.
Now I understand
why the old poets of China went so far
and high
into the mountains, then crept into the pale mist.
"The Old Poets of China" by Mary Oliver

The UP Asian Center conducted an Alumni Kumustahan session online last 3 December 2022, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, via Zoom. Representatives from recent and past graduates met and had a lively “kumustahan” or catching up, explored new opportunities, and discussed the reconvening of the Asian Center Alumni Association. The assembly was facilitated by Ms. Lorna Israel, AC alumna, who graduated with a degree in MA Philippine Studie s in 2007.

BOOK TALK: THE SIEGE OF JOLO, 1974 (IN PAGBUNUH HA LUPA SUG, 1974)

To kick off the session, the group conducted a brief discussion on the recently published book, The Siege of Jolo, 1974 by AC alumna, Ms. Agnes Shari T. Aliman. The book features stories of survival of the Tausug people during the bloody battles in Sulu. It presents accounts and narratives of the military captains at the time that she was able to interview.
The discussion sparked new research interests among the alumni as they raised collaborative topics that could be explored in the future.

SHARING OF CAREER EXPERIENCE

Dr. Katrina SJ Navallo, alumna and currently a lecturer at the UP Asian Center, also shared her experience of changing her career path from nursing to the academe. Dr. Navallo is a registered nurse by profession and is now a junior programme manager at the Tokyo-based ASEAN-Japan Centre, applying her healthcare knowledge and labor migration interest to research.
