Wherever I am, the world comes after me.
It offers me its busyness. It does not believe that I do not want it.
Now I understand
why the old poets of China went so far
and high
into the mountains, then crept into the pale mist.
"The Old Poets of China" by Mary Oliver

The UP Asian Center invites the public to attend the upcoming colloquium and exhibit launch titled “Salingkat: The Allure of Philippine Basketry” on 7 June 2023, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, at the Seminar and Japan Hall, UP Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman. Register for the event through the link provided. Kindly note that registration is required due to limited seating availability.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

In line with our commitment to promoting Filipino identity and fostering a sense of pride in our Asian and Filipino heritage, this event marks a significant milestone as the Asian Center plans to institutionalize its very own museum which was first established in 1973 by Dr. F. Landa Jocano, the Philippines' foremost anthropologist and former Dean of the Institute of Philippine Studies at the Philippine Center for Advanced Studies.
This new exhibit will feature around 200 ethnographic items on traditional basketry from all over the Philippines, holding a significant place within the Asian Center Ethnographic Collection which showcases artifacts from the Philippines and other Asian countries. Through this exhibit, we also aim to highlight the rich diversity of basket weaving traditions in the Philippines and celebrate the artistry and skill of Filipino basket weavers.
As a testament to the enduring legacy of Dr. Jocano, esteemed scholars Dr. Carolyn Sobritchea, Dr. Mary Racelis, and Assistant Professor Felipe Jocano Jr. will lead a colloquium, offering profound insights into the life and invaluable contributions of Dr. F. Landa Jocano. Following this discussion, the exhibit will be officially opened to the public.
We warmly encourage everyone to participate in this celebration of our cultural heritage.
