As part of the partnership-building efforts between the University of the Philippines and the Malaysian government, the Asian Center received a Malaysian delegation led by Ambassador H.E. Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino bin Anthony on 23 August 2023.
Asian Center Dean and Professor Dr. Henelito Sevilla with AC Associate Professor Dr. Ariel Lopez welcomed the delegation that included: Mr. Mohd Fareed Zakaria, Deputy Chief of Mission; Mrs. Hazlina Mohammed Hatta, Counsellor; and, Ms. Nadhirah Mohammad Zanudain, Counsellor. Possible collaborations discussed during the visit were student and faculty exchanges, a roundtable discussion on the Halal Industry, and the institution of an ASEAN Book Center.
Prior to their visit to AC, Ambassador Castelino and the delegation paid a courtesy call to UP President Atty. Angelo A. Jimenez, accompanied by Atty. Edgardo Carlo Vistan II, UP Diliman Chancellor, Dr. Imee Su Martinez, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs (Internationalization) and Director of Office of International Linkages, and AC Dean Sevilla. Both parties agreed to increase collaboration between UP and Malaysian Universities – a discussion that began with the visit to UP of Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on 2 March 2023, during which the UP conferred an honoris causa to the esteemed state leader.
Before presenting his credentials to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on 23 March 2023, Dato’ Abdul Malik was ambassador of Malaysia to the Republic of Italy. He also served in Malaysian diplomatic missions to London, the United Kingdom, Abuja, and Nigeria. The Malaysian Ambassador holds a degree in Management from the International University of Malaysia.

The Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman offers M.A. degrees in Asian Studies with four fields of specialization: Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. The UP Asian Center also has an M.A. program in Philippine Studies that allows students to major in Philippine society and culture, Philippine foreign relations, or Philippine development studies. It also offers a Ph.D. program in Philippine Studies in conjunction with the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
