UP Asian Center alumnus Abdulwahid Panganting was awarded the 2023 Prize for Global Research by the provincial government of Antwerp, Belgium for his thesis, “A move forward or a step backward? Challenges in implementing the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro.” He was among 10 graduates who received the award as recognition for their “innovative and development-related research on the Global South.”
Present during the awarding ceremony at the Antwerp provincial hall on 13 September 2023 were the Belgian Development Cooperation Minister Caroline Gennez, Antwerp Governor Cathy Berx, Institute of Development Policy (IOB) Dean Danny Cassimon, and Deputy for Global Policy of the Province of Antwerp Ludwig Caluwé.
Mr. Panganting earned his Advanced Master of Governance and Development from the Institute of Development Policy (IOB) at the University of Antwerp-Belgium under a scholarship from VLIR-UOS, a Flemish government office. He graduated with distinction (equivalent to Magna Cum Laude), ranking first in the Governance and Development Program where his research was also adjudged as the best thesis.
During the graduation ceremony, Consul General Pablito A. Mendoza attended and represented the Philippine Embassy. Five other Filipino students received their master’s degrees.
Abdulwahid graduated with a Master of Arts in Asian Studies degree specializing in Southeast Asia at the UP Asian Center in 2020. His master’s thesis was “The Converging Role of Traditional Leaders and Non-Traditional Leaders in Conflict Resolution: The Cases of Mindanao, Philippines and Maluku, Indonesia.” Currently, he is working at the Office of the President - National Commission on Muslim Filipinos. The Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman offers M.A. degrees in Asian Studies with four fields of specialization: Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. The UP Asian Center also has an M.A. program in Philippine Studies that allows students to major in Philippine society and culture, Philippine foreign relations, or Philippine development studies.
