The UP Asian Center in partnership with the Eurasia Center of John von Neumann University will hold the symposium "The Practice of Area Studies in the Philippines and Hungary" on 9 September 2024, 1:30 to 3:30 PM, at the Seminar Room, UP Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman. The event is free and open to the public. Online pre-registration is recommended due to limited seating.

ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

This symposium is an academic collaboration between the Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman and the Eurasia Center, John von Neumann University. This symposium intends for the faculty of the participating institutions to have an exchange about their general research interests in Area Studies to facilitate a better appreciation of points of common interest in aid of future collaboration. Presenters will discuss the areas of their teaching and research and contextualize their succeeding collaborations. The event seeks to achieve the following specific objectives:
•     Navigate the fields of Area Studies in respective geopolitical and geoeconomic settings in the Philippines and Hungary.
•     Inform future opportunities for cooperation between academic institutions of shared as well as different interests and perspectives.
•     Understand diverse forms of connectedness between objects of study and academic institutions.
•     Explore ways where Area Studies could contribute to academic and public understanding of contemporary social issues on global and local levels.
•     Bring together scholars of diverse academic backgrounds and disciplines for inter or transdisciplinary perspectives toward Area Studies.

THE  CONVENERS

TINA S. CLEMENTE, Ph.D.

Tina S. Clemente is a Professor at the Asian Center, University of the Philippines, Diliman. She earned her Ph.D. at the School of Economics at the same university. Her research interests include development, China Studies in the Philippines, Philippines–China economic relations, and economic history. She co-edited Studies of China and Chineseness since the Cultural Revolution: Volume 2: Micro Intellectual History through De-central Lenses (2023, World Scientific) and China Studies in the Philippines: Intellectual Paths and the Formation of a Field (2018, Routledge). She was a program convener of the 2016 China/Strategic Studies Program of the UP Center of Integrative and Development Studies. Dr. Clemente is a former president of the Philippine Association for Chinese Studies and the first editor-in-chief of the Chinese Studies Journal. She received the 2022 Gawad Tsanselor Sa Natatanging Guro, the most prestigious award for UP Diliman faculty that recognizes excellence in teaching, research, and service. 

LEVENTE HORVÁTH, Ph.D.

Levente Horváth is the founding Director of Eurasia Center of the John von Neumann University, Hungary. Dr. Horváth has been dealing with China from 2005 onwards since his undergraduate and graduate education in China. Dr. Horváth received his Ph.D. from the University of Pécs, His research focused on Chinese geopolitical thinking and the One Belt, One Road initiative. From 2015 to 2017, He served as the Consul General of Hungary in Shanghai from 2015 to 2017. Afterward, he served as the Head of the Educational Department in the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, the central bank of Hungary until 2019. He then became the Chief Advisor to the Governor of the central bank of Hungary. In 2021 he was awarded the Shanghai Silver Magnolia Award for his contributions to Shanghai’s development with respect to its economy, trade, finance, education and culture.

The Eurasia Center is one of the centers in Hungary for the scientific study of the Eurasian region using a geopolitical approach. The center's research focuses on the geopolitical, economic, and social processes of the region. The Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman offers M.A. degrees in Asian Studies with four fields of specialization: Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. The UP Asian Center also has an M.A. program in Philippine Studies that allows students to major in Philippine society and culture, Philippine foreign relations, or Philippine development studies. It also offers a Ph.D. program in Philippine Studies in conjunction with the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
