The UP Asian Center in partnership with the Eurasia Center of John von Neumann University will hold the symposium "The Practice of Area Studies in the Philippines and Hungary" on 9 September 2024, 1:30 to 3:30 PM, at the Seminar Room, UP Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman. The event is free and open to the public. Online pre-registration is recommended due to limited seating.
ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
This symposium is an academic collaboration between the Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman and the Eurasia Center, John von Neumann University. This symposium intends for the faculty of the participating institutions to have an exchange about their general research interests in Area Studies to facilitate a better appreciation of points of common interest in aid of future collaboration. Presenters will discuss the areas of their teaching and research and contextualize their succeeding collaborations. The event seeks to achieve the following specific objectives:
• Navigate the fields of Area Studies in respective geopolitical and geoeconomic settings in the Philippines and Hungary. • Inform future opportunities for cooperation between academic institutions of shared as well as different interests and perspectives. • Understand diverse forms of connectedness between objects of study and academic institutions. • Explore ways where Area Studies could contribute to academic and public understanding of contemporary social issues on global and local levels. • Bring together scholars of diverse academic backgrounds and disciplines for inter or transdisciplinary perspectives toward Area Studies.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS
The international symposium is organized by the Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman in partnership with the Eurasia Center of John von Neumann University. The EurasiaCenter is one of the centers in Hungary for the scientific study of the Eurasian region using a geopolitical approach. The center's research focuses on the geopolitical, economic, and social processes of the region. They publish professional publications, including the scientific journal Eurasia Review and the informative magazine Eurasia, in addition to collections of scientific studies in English, and weekly news reviews. The Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman offers M.A. degrees in Asian Studies with four fields of specialization: Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. The UP Asian Center also has an M.A. program in Philippine Studies that allows students to major in Philippine society and culture, Philippine foreign relations, or Philippine development studies. It also offers a Ph.D. program in Philippine Studies in conjunction with the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
