Wherever I am, the world comes after me.
It offers me its busyness. It does not believe that I do not want it.
Now I understand
why the old poets of China went so far
and high
into the mountains, then crept into the pale mist.
"The Old Poets of China" by Mary Oliver

ABOUT THE NEW AC ADJUNCT PROFESSOR

Dr. Maria Reinaruth Carlos is currently a Professor at the Graduate School of International Studies, Kyoto, Japan. She was previously appointed to research and teaching positions at the Third World Studies Center, University of the Philippines Diliman, the Language Institute, Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, and is currently also affiliated as a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Social Care, Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Dr. Carlos’s research explores pressing global themes through the lens of Philippine migration. During her time at the Asian Center, she will work on her current research projects, focusing on the international mobility of skilled Filipino workers, particularly nurses and teachers, and the complexities of their migration pathways, integration, and post-retirement plans. She also examines recruitment and retention strategies in ageing societies, such as Japan and the UK, and investigates the socio-economic roles of Filipino communities in Japan during times of crisis. Dr. Carlos’s adjunct professorship is part of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Asian Center and the Graduate School and Faculty of International Studies. Her presence will contribute to the promotion of the Center’s Asian and Philippine Studies programs, notably on research areas of migration, labor mobility, and transnational identities.
