ABOUT THE LECTURE
"Hindu Populism Against Religious Minorities in India"
In India, the use of Hindu religious populism against religious minorities under the leadership of the far-right Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached new heights, consequently increasing hostility towards Indian Muslims and Christians among the Hindu majority, who seek to take revenge for historical grievances. Drawing on the theories of 'Hindu nationalism', 'populism' and 'secularism', this presentation focuses on religious populism, its links with Hindu nationalism, and its impact on the human rights of Christian and Muslim minorities in the northern Indian district of Varanasi. The possibilities of resistance against Hindu nationalist populism will also be part of this presentation.
