The UP Asian Center and the Embassy of Bangladesh, Manila will be holding a hybrid seminar to celebrate the “50 Years of Diplomatic Relations between Bangladesh and the Philippines: Achievements, Challenges and Potentials” on 17 November 2022, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm (GMT+8), at the GT-Toyota Auditorium, Asian Center, and via Zoom. The event is free and open to the public. Registration to Zoom is required for online attendees. Online registration is also REQUIRED for on-site attendees. Seating is first-come, first-served.

ABOUT THE EVENT

In 2022, Bangladesh and the Philippines are celebrating the 50 years of the establishment of their diplomatic relations. The Philippines was one of the first Southeast Asian countries to recognize Bangladesh’s independence in 24 February 1972. Since then, the relations expanded in many areas in the regional and international fora. Efforts have been underway to further enhance the bilateral cooperation in education, agriculture, defense, pharmaceuticals, migration, climate change and trade and investment where peoples from both countries can benefit.

•   H. E. Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen, MP
      Hon'ble Foreign Minister, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
      H. E. Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen, MP is the Foreign Minister of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He obtained his Ph.D. in Economics and MBA in Business Administration from the Northeastern University in Boston.
•   H.E. F.M. Borhan Uddin
      Bangladesh Ambassador to the Philippines
      H.E. F.M. Borhan Uddin is the Bangladesh Ambassador to the Philippines. Before serving as the ambassador, he served as the Director General of the West Asia Wing and as the coordinator of the Coronal Cell at the Ministry of Foreign Affaris. Ambassador Uddin obtained his graduate degree at the Dhaka Unviersity, and his law degree (LLB Hons.) from the University of London.
•   Mr. M.d. Najmul Huda
      Director General, South East Asia Wing, Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs
      Mr. M.d. Najmul Huda is the Director General of the South East Asia Wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He graduated at the University of Chitagong with a Master of Arts degree in English Literature.

PHILIPPINE DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
•   H. E. Enrique A. Manalo
      Hon'ble Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Government of the Republic of the Philippines
      H. E. Enrique A. Manalo is the Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in the Philippines. He joined DFA in 1979 and from August 2007 to February 2010, he served as the DFA Undersecretary under the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Mr. Manalo obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Economics from the University of the Philippines.
•   Ms. Maria Anna Lilia De Vera-Schinazi
      Deputy Assistant Secretary, Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs

The Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman offers M.A. degrees in Asian Studies with four fields of specialization: Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. The UP Asian Center also has an M.A. program in Philippine Studies that allows students to major in Philippine society and culture, Philippine foreign relations, or Philippine development studies. It also offers a Ph.D. program in Philippine Studies in conjunction with the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
