Human Rights Issues in the Global South: The Case of Myanmar in the Context of ASEAN: A Webinar (6 June 2022)
Details
The students of the UP Asian Center, PS 282 will be holding the webinar, “Human Rights Issues in the Global South: The Case of Myanmar in the Context of ASEAN,” on 6 June 2022, 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Philippine time via Zoom. The webinar is free and open to the public, but registration and signing in to a (free) Zoom account are required.
ABOUT THE WEBINAR
As mandated by the ASEAN Charter, the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) established the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) that aims to promote human rights and fundamental freedoms of the peoples across the region. It aims “to promote human rights within the regional context, bearing in mind national and regional particularities and mutual respect for different historical, cultural and religious backgrounds, and taking into account the balance between rights and responsibilities.” To do so, ASEAN, through the AICHR, hopes to enhance awareness on human rights through education and information dissemination initiatives.
The United Nations described Rohingyas as “the world's most persecuted minority.” In this regard, this webinar seeks to further deepen understanding on the human rights situation in ASEAN with a specific focus on Myanmar. Specifically, it aims to gain additional knowledge on the role of AICHR in protecting and promoting the rights of the diverse peoples in the region.
