The UP Asian Center will hold a public forum, “Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and the Bangsamoro Organic Law: Prospects and Challenges” on 3 July 2019, 4 pm, UP Asian Center, QC. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served. Walk-ins are welcome but interested participants are encouraged to sign up.
ABOUT THE FORUM
Under Republic Act No. 11054, the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) has formally been placed to govern the new BARMM, replacing the existing Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
As required by the said law, a plebiscite was held on 21 January 2019, and the Organic Law for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) was ratified. The BTA will govern until the May 2020 polls.
As the BTA moves forward in its enormous task of setting up the new BARMM bureaucracy, it is time to look at salient features of the law again vis-a-vis the GPH-MILF Peace Process Timeline. Difficulties and challenges lie ahead, and this forum aims to assess the current political environment.
The forum is organized by the students of Philippine Studies (PS) 233 under Dr. Ma Cecilia Medina of the UP Asian Center, who is teaching the course this mid-year term. PS 233 covers "Issues in Philippine Development."
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
To lead the discussion is Atty. Abdel Jamal Ramos Disangcopan, Law Reform Specialist from the University of the Philippines Law Center.
