The UP Asian Center will be hosting a webinar, “The Future of the State in the Middle East ” on 27 October 2021, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM, Philippine Standard Time.** The webinar is free and open to the public, but participation requires signing in to a basic (free) Zoom account.

Abstract

This lecture will focus on the challenges experiences by states in the Middle East in the last 40 years, such as legitimacy, economic challenges, domestic politics matters and challenges in their foreign policy. The webinar shall look into the future of the states in the light of those challenges.

Speaker

Dr. Mahjoob Zweiri is an Associate Professor of Contemporary Politics of the Middle East and the Director of the Gulf Studies Center, Qatar University. Prior to joining Qatar University in 2010, Dr. Zweiri was a senior researcher of Middle East Politics and Iran at the Center for Strategic Studies, University of Jordan. He was also a visiting professor to the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University. From March 2003-December 2006 he was a research fellow and the director of the Centre for Iranian Studies in the Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at Durham University. Dr. Zweiri has more than 60 publications in the areas of Iran and Contemporary Middle East History and Politics. He is also fluent in Arabic, Farsi, and English.

The UP Asian Center offers M.A. degrees in Asian Studies with four fields of specialization: Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. The Center also has an M.A. program in Philippine Studies that allows students to major in Philippine society and culture, Philippine foreign relations, or Philippine development studies. The Center offers a Ph.D.  program in Philippine Studies in conjunction with the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
